ABUJA, Oct 15 – Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, said on Wednesday that a U.S. State Department warning about the risks of investing in Nigeria shows President Bola Tinubu's government is failing to attract long-term capital. He spoke three months before the Jan. 16 election.

"In a nation with an effective, competent and attentive government, this kind of adverse report would have elicited immediate intervention by the President and Commander in Chief ordering prompt investigation, follow-up and effective action," Obi wrote in a post on X, as The Guardian reported. Obi pointed to the 2026 Nigeria Investment Climate Statement. He said it "clearly flagged corruption, insecurity, inconsistent regulatory enforcement and weaknesses in the judicial system, cargo delays and power sector challenges" as reasons investors lack confidence in Nigeria, Naija News reported. He also cited first-quarter 2026 figures. Of $10.37 billion in total capital imports, only $135.08 million, about 1.3%, was foreign direct investment, while about $9.86 billion went into portfolio flows, Legit.ng reported. Obi said the gap shows the need to attract investment that supports production and jobs. He said celebrating macroeconomic indicators would do little to build confidence unless investors' concerns are addressed, The Nation reported. The federal government had not publicly responded to Obi's remarks, Legit.ng said. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has previously defended Tinubu's reforms. "The priority for Nigeria should be the consolidation of ongoing economic gains, not the laying of a new foundation," APC National Vice Chairman (South-East) Ijeomah Arodiogbu said in response to earlier criticism from Obi, Blueprint reported. The NDC was due to hold a town hall meeting in Enugu on Thursday as part of a series that has already visited Rivers, Sokoto and Kaduna states, Punch reported. No report on the Enugu event had been published at the time of writing. [punchng](https://punchng.com/2027-ndc-inaugurates-presidential-campaign-council-october-20/)

The party plans to launch its Presidential Campaign Council on Oct. 20 and present certificates of return to its candidates, The Sun reported. Obi and Kwankwaso will nominate key officials, including the director-general and the finance director. [thesun](https://thesun.ng/2027-ndc-fixes-october-20-for-campaign-council-inauguration/)

The arrangement follows weeks of friction after the party disowned a 59-member campaign council announced by the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement, a support group, Daily Trust reported. [dailytrust](https://dailytrust.com/ndc-concedes-dg-campaign-council-to-obi-kwankwaso/)

National Chairman Moses Cleopas said last Saturday that the party leadership was united behind the ticket. "We shall match the APC fire-for-fire before, during and after the election until May 29, 2027," he said, according to Punch. At an earlier NDC town hall in Kaduna, Obi said, "What we want now is that we want politics to be demand-driven, not supply-driven." Kwankwaso said the large turnout showed growing interest in the party, Punch reported. [punchng](https://punchng.com/2027-obi-asks-nigerians-to-drive-campaign-agenda/)

The election is 93 days away, and INEC lists 18 presidential candidates, GNA TV reported. [bbc](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0q20xzwppdo)

SDP (Adewole Adebayo). Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party candidate, on Wednesday urged Tinubu to "step aside." His statement followed Tinubu's announcement that he would cut back his personal appearances at campaign events in the states. "The excuse of bowing out of the 2027 campaign is a cowardly smokescreen. The truth is that the President is terrified of the Nigerian people," Adebayo said, the Gazette reported. The Lagos APC replied on Thursday through spokesman Seye Oladejo, advising Adebayo to focus on his own party's campaign. AAC (Omoyele Sowore). Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress candidate, filed a 5 billion naira suit on Oct. 13 against the State Security Service (also called the DSS), its director-general and the attorney-general. The suit concerns an alleged assault and his forcible removal from the Federal High Court in Abuja on June 22, ThisDay reported. The AAC said on Thursday that the court's surroundings and the Ministry of Justice would be official campaign venues in October, since Sowore must keep appearing in a separate case brought by the State Security Service. The party asked supporters to attend the next sitting on Oct. 19, Sahara Reporters reported.
