Reform UK Faces Racism Exposé Fallout, Fines as UK Political Scandals Mount
Oct 22 – Reform UK is facing mounting pressure on multiple fronts, after claiming an ITV undercover racism investigation left some of its members psychologically damaged, reporting the broadcaster to police, and receiving a fine from the Electoral Commission for campaign material violations, according to The Guardian.
Reform UK chairman Zia Yusuf alleged the undercover investigation broke the law, even as ITV stood by its journalism, The Guardian reported. The party claimed the exposé had caused psychological harm to members implicated in the investigation. The move to report ITV to police drew widespread attention and prompted commentary that the party, long associated with a tough-on-crime image, was behaving as what critics described as snowflakes in the face of journalistic scrutiny.
Separately, the Electoral Commission fined Reform UK more than 2,000 pounds for failing to declare it was the publisher of campaign material distributed to voters, The Guardian reported. The fine included an additional penalty after the party failed to pay the original sanction on time. The Electoral Commission found that four items of election material were missing a legally required imprint, a declaration identifying who paid for the promotional content.
The Conservative Party also faced serious controversy, with The Guardian reporting that former Tory election candidate Jack Ross was suspended from the party after being filmed apparently discussing the cost of hiring contract killers and offering to broker the services of a far-right activist with alleged paramilitary links. Ross was filmed asking an undercover reporter what he wanted done before listing violent options available for purchase. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police confirmed it is investigating an allegation that former Democratic Unionist Party leader Jeffrey Donaldson raped a woman inside the Palace of Westminster in 2016, following a referral from the Police Service of Northern Ireland on Oct. 13, The Guardian reported. Donaldson is now 63.
Amid the scandals, The Guardian reported that polls now show the Conservatives and Reform UK running neck and neck, raising questions about whether Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch can reclaim the party's position as the dominant force on the British right. For two years, momentum had rested with Nigel Farage's Reform UK, but recent polling suggests a shift may be underway, according to The Guardian's political correspondent Aletha Adu.
In Nigeria, the Punch reported that Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle donated vehicles to eight Zamfara state lawmakers who recently returned to the All Progressives Congress, a gesture widely seen as a reward for their political realignment. Separately, Punch reported that Peoples Democratic Party chieftain Segun Showunmi said the death of MKO Abiola and the June 12 struggle profoundly shaped his belief in Nigeria's democratic development, reflecting ongoing public reflection on the country's democratic history.
