Obi clarifies diaspora remarks as NDC reschedules campaign council inauguration
ABUJA, Oct 21 – Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has clarified remarks regarding Nigerians living abroad, stating that his comments urging citizens in the diaspora to encourage reforms at home were not intended to suggest abandoning family responsibilities.
The clarification, published on his verified social handles and reported by [TheCable](https://www.thecable.ng/), followed public discussions over diaspora remittances and economic accountability ahead of the January 2027 general election.
"I deeply appreciate Nigerians in the diaspora who work tirelessly and make enormous sacrifices to support their families back home," Obi wrote, as highlighted by [Legit.ng](https://www.legit.ng/politics/1737048-peter-obi-clarifies-comment-urging-nigerians-send-money-home/). "Their patriotism and sacrifices deserve our profound respect."
Obi emphasized that his broader political vision centers on building a domestic economy capable of providing jobs, quality education, and affordable healthcare so that citizens are not solely reliant on external financial support to survive.
In a related campaign development, the NDC announced it has postponed the formal unveiling and inauguration of its national campaign council for the 2027 polls from October 20 to October 26, according to coverage by the [Western Post](https://www.westernpost.ng/ndc-shifts-obi-kwankwaso-campaign-council-inauguration-to-october-26/).
Party leaders noted that the adjustment is designed to accommodate broader stakeholder consultations across the six geopolitical zones as the alliance consolidates its organizational structures.
Political opponents and critics, however, have sought to leverage recent policy debates and administrative adjustments to question the opposition coalition's internal coordination.
NDC representatives dismissed those criticisms, reiterating that the joint ticket of Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso remains fully unified and focused on presenting a transparent, production-driven alternative to the incumbent administration.
