SDP candidate Adewole Adebayo challenged other contenders to a debate. As NDC candidate Obi calls out the Federal Government on it's policies.
ABUJA, Oct 14 – Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, said on Wednesday that a U.S. government warning to investors about risks in Nigeria showed that President Bola Tinubu's administration was "incompetent, ineffective and corrupt". He pointed to low foreign direct investment as the cost of those risks.
"As the APC-led government continue in their delusional celebration of Nigeria's macroeconomic stability, the warning from the United States Government to prospective investors on inherent risks in Nigeria, further affirms the general and correct assessment" of the government, Obi wrote on X, Naija News reported. [naijanews](https://www.naijanews.com/2026/10/14/shame-tinubu-government-scaring-away-investors-peter-obi/)
He cited the U.S. State Department's 2026 Nigeria Investment Climate Statement. The report flagged corruption, insecurity, uneven enforcement of regulations, weak courts, cargo delays and power-sector failures, and warned that firms in disputes could face arbitrary detention and exit bans, Legit.ng reported. Obi said that of the $10.37 billion in capital imported in the first quarter of 2026, only $135.08 million, about 1.3%, was foreign direct investment. Portfolio flows made up about 95.1%. "It is paradoxical that while the Tinubu administration is celebrating macroeconomic stability, it is unwittingly scaring away foreign investors," he said, closing with his campaign line: "A New and Productive Nigeria is POssible and Nigeria will be OK."
The federal government had not publicly responded to Obi's remarks at the time of reporting, Legit.ng said. [legit](https://www.legit.ng/nigeria/1736096-peter-obi-reacts-warning-investment-risks-nigeria-tinubu/)
The ruling party went after Obi on the same day. At the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council in Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima called Obi "the master of bogus statistics and incoherent economic prescriptions", Legit.ng reported. Shettima also dismissed Obi's claim that he won the 2023 election. The APC plans to launch its presidential campaign in Kaduna on Oct. 24. Also on Wednesday, the G-100 opposition group said party chairmen and secretaries from six opposition parties, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress, had met Obi and four other presidential candidates. The talks aim to "identify areas of common ground" before the election, the Sun newspaper reported. The talks are ongoing, and no agreement on a single opposition candidate was announced. Obi has said any such deal must be decided by the parties, not by individual candidates, BusinessDay reported. The party is also building its campaign machinery. National Chairman Moses Cleopas Zuwoghe said on Oct. 10 that the presidential campaign council would be inaugurated on Oct. 20, and that Obi and Kwankwaso would nominate its key officials. "We are convinced that if it is the votes to win the 2027 general elections, we have them," he said, the Sun reported. Daily Trust gave the date as Nov. 20. Earlier this month, the party and Obi's Obidient Movement criticised the government's 30-day petrol discount at state oil company NNPC's stations. Party spokesman Osa Director called it "tokenism and a Greek gift", Punch newspaper reported. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele has said the discount is "not a return to fuel subsidy". Social Democratic Party (SDP): Adewole Adebayo, the SDP's presidential candidate, challenged Tinubu and other contenders to an open debate during a live appearance on Adeola Fayehun's "Talking It Real" on Tuesday night. "I will meet them on any stage, under any condition," he said, Vanguard reported. He also used the show to outline his 2027–2031 policy document, "Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity", which includes opening up the energy sector and fully reopening state-owned refineries. Adebayo was also among the candidates in the opposition talks described by the G-100. [vanguardngr](https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/10/2027-debate-dodgers-are-empty-upstairs-adebayo/)
African Action Congress (AAC): Omoyele Sowore, the AAC's presidential candidate, criticised a colloquium held in honour of Seyi Tinubu, the president's son. In a post on X, he asked what public service or national achievement was being celebrated while Nigerians faced hunger, unemployment and insecurity, AllAfrica reported. Last week the party set up a campaign council for Sowore and his running mate, Haruna Magashi, led by Director-General Abdullahi Usman, Punch reported.
