Nigeria's 2027 Election Preparations Dominate Political Landscape as House Speaker Unveils Legislative Agenda
Oct 14 – Nigeria's political scene is intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the House of Representatives Speaker launching a legislative push, the electoral commission setting key deadlines, and parties trading accusations, as the ruling All Progressives Congress moves to consolidate its position across the country.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas unveiled a 100-day plan to clear a backlog of pending bills and committee reports, according to PUNCH. Abbas urged lawmakers to remain focused on their legislative duties and warned them not to allow preparations for the 2027 elections to interfere with their responsibilities to Nigerians. The announcement signals an effort by the House leadership to demonstrate productivity at a time when political maneuvering is already intensifying across party lines.
The Independent National Electoral Commission added to the electoral calendar by giving political parties until October 24 to challenge the omission of their candidates from the final list for the 2027 governorship elections, PUNCH reported. The deadline underscores the commission's effort to resolve candidate disputes well in advance of the polls and gives parties a narrow but defined window to address any irregularities in the published lists.
On the party politics front, the APC challenged opposition parties to focus on debating policy issues and manifestos rather than directing personal attacks at President Bola Tinubu, PUNCH reported. Separately, Christian leaders in Kaduna State vowed to mobilise voters across the 19 northern states in support of Tinubu's re-election bid and that of Kaduna Governor Uba Sani, according to PUNCH. In Anambra State, lawmaker Princess Chinwe Nnabuife defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance to the APC ahead of the 2027 polls, with Senator Uche Ekwunife and others on hand to welcome her into the party, PUNCH reported.
Tensions also flared at the state level, with the APC in Oyo State accusing supporters of the Action Peoples Movement governorship candidate of vandalising billboards belonging to Senator Sharafadeen Alli in Ibadan, according to PUNCH. The APM disputed the accusation, with both parties exchanging sharp words over the incident in what observers may view as an early sign of the friction likely to characterise campaigns in the months ahead.
With the electoral commission enforcing firm deadlines, the House Speaker pressing for legislative output, and parties already engaged in recruitment drives and public disputes, Nigeria's political environment is clearly shifting into a pre-election mode. The coming weeks are expected to bring further realignments and policy debates as all major parties position themselves for what promises to be a fiercely contested 2027 election cycle.
