Nigeria Faces Ebola Scare, Fuel Tax Backlash and Security Concerns Amid Flurry of Developments
Oct 22 – Nigeria confronted a convergence of public health, economic and security challenges this week, as a confirmed Ebola case in Abuja triggered nationwide concern, a proposed fuel tax drew widespread condemnation and security agencies recorded arrests across multiple states, according to reports from Daily Post Nigeria.
The confirmed Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory dominated national attention. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, disclosed during an emergency meeting in Abuja on Wednesday that the patient is a diplomat whose condition has deteriorated. "It has gotten worse," said Olajumoke Babatunde, Director of Public Health Laboratory Service at the NCDC, according to Daily Post Nigeria. The development prompted the National Orientation Agency, NOA, to issue public advisories in at least two states. In Borno State, NOA Director Michael Bdliya urged residents to remain calm and observe preventive measures, while in Jigawa State, state director Mallam Ahmed Tijjani Ibrahim echoed the same call. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar added a political dimension to the crisis, raising alarm over the Tinubu administration's failure to account for a N10 billion fund approved for Ebola preparedness. In a statement by his spokesperson Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the lapse exposed "a dangerous breakdown in the government's response," Daily Post Nigeria reported.
On the economic front, plans by the Federal Government to introduce a fuel tax drew sharp public criticism. Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele had revealed the proposal, clarifying that the tax would only take effect under certain conditions. Despite that qualification, Nigerians widely described the move as callous and insensitive given prevailing economic hardships, according to Daily Post Nigeria. The announcement also drew fire from the political opposition. The Makinde-Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation, in a statement by its Director of Strategic Communications Richard Ihediwa, said President Bola Tinubu "cannot lead Nigeria to the promised land," accusing his administration of worsening economic conditions through its policies.
Security developments unfolded across several states. In Ogun State, police arrested a suspected member of the Aiye confraternity, identified as Idris Obarayi, 30, and recovered a locally made pistol and live cartridge following reports of gunshots in the Oke Ago-Owu area of Abeokuta, according to Command spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi. In Abuja, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged vandalism of electrical installations in Abaji, Jahi and Bwari, recovering armoured cables and other electrical equipment during intelligence-led operations. Meanwhile, the Rivers State Government dispatched officials from the Ministries of Energy and Natural Resources, and Environment to inspect a gas pipeline explosion site in the Aleto community of Eleme Local Government Area, where residents sustained injuries and property losses.
In Niger State, the Ward Development Project Steering Committee raised concerns about poor workmanship and delays following a three-day inspection of infrastructure projects across the state's three senatorial districts. The inspection uncovered a market store project at Mutun Daya in Shiroro Local Government Area where construction had yet to begin, Daily Post Nigeria reported. The findings underscored persistent governance challenges in the delivery of grassroots development projects across Nigeria.
