Bandits Kill All Passengers in Sokoto Ambush as Nigeria Grapples With Security, Health and Political Developments
Oct 23 – Bandits intercepted a passenger vehicle returning from Sokoto city and shot dead everyone on board, conflict reporter Bakatsine reported, in the latest act of armed violence to strike northwestern Nigeria. The attack occurred along the road to Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, though the exact number of casualties had not been confirmed as of the time of reporting, according to Daily Post Nigeria.
The Sokoto killings added to a broader security picture across the country. In Kano, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps arrested two men suspected of vandalising railway sleepers in Kanwa village, Madobi Local Government Area, according to NSCDC Kano State Commandant Mohamed Hassan Agalama. The suspects were identified as Shamsu Isyaku, 25, described as the principal suspect, and Shehu, whose details were not fully disclosed. Separately, an Imo State High Court scheduled four consecutive trial days, from Oct. 27 to 30, for five men accused of kidnapping prospective National Youth Service Corps members, with the court urging lawyers on both sides to conclude proceedings before January 2027.
A reported imported case of Ebola Virus Disease in the Federal Capital Territory prompted responses from multiple government agencies. The National Biosafety Management Agency called on Nigerians to remain calm but vigilant, with Director-General Dr. Fatima Suleiman-Zuntu saying the agency was committed to supporting the national response. Adamawa State activated its Rapid Response Team and Emergency Operations Centre as a precautionary measure, the state Ministry of Health and Human Development said Thursday. On the political front, President Bola Tinubu approved the appointment of Yusuf Bichi, the immediate past Director-General of the Department of State Services, as chairman of the Governing Board of the National Institute for Security Studies in Abuja. The appointment followed a recommendation by current DSS Director-General Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, Daily Post Nigeria reported.
Political tensions surfaced within Tinubu's own party as the Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress said it had not been formally informed about the inauguration of the state Presidential Campaign Committee for the president's 2027 re-election bid. State chairman Tajudeen Lawal disclosed this in a statement issued Thursday. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Communications Commission held a stakeholders forum in Jalingo, Taraba State, urging residents to take ownership of and protect Critical National Information Infrastructure to strengthen cybersecurity and support national development. In Ogun State, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, insisted that recurring gas emissions in parts of Ijebuland posed no lethal threat, while pledging that affected communities would be relocated if scientific findings established a risk of death or permanent health damage.
The day's developments reflected the range of challenges confronting Nigerian authorities, from persistent armed banditry in the northwest and a public health alert in the capital to judicial proceedings, political friction within the ruling party and infrastructure security concerns, underscoring the complexity of governance across Africa's most populous nation.
