Nigeria Faces Ebola Scare, Fuel Tax Backlash and Political Tensions Amid Busy News Cycle
Oct 21 – Nigeria confronted a convergence of pressing challenges on Wednesday, as health authorities reported a deteriorating Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory, public anger mounted over a proposed fuel tax, opposition figures sharpened attacks on President Bola Tinubu's administration, and security forces made arrests in Ogun State, according to reports by Daily Post Nigeria.
The Ebola situation drew the most urgent attention. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said during an emergency meeting in Abuja that the condition of the country's lone confirmed Ebola patient had worsened. The NCDC's Director of Public Health Laboratory Service, Olajumoke Babatunde, identified the patient as a diplomat, according to Daily Post Nigeria. The development prompted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to raise the alarm over the federal government's failure to account for N10 billion approved for Ebola preparedness. In a statement by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the lapse exposed a dangerous breakdown in the government's response, Daily Post Nigeria reported.
On the economic front, widespread anger greeted a disclosure by Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, that the federal government plans to introduce a fuel tax. Nigerians described the proposal as callous and insensitive given prevailing economic hardship, according to Daily Post Nigeria. The minister sought to temper the backlash by clarifying that the tax would only be imposed under certain conditions, though the clarification did little to quell public discontent. The announcement added fuel to political criticism of the Tinubu administration, with the Makinde-Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation, through its Director of Strategic Communications, Richard Ihediwa, declaring that President Tinubu could not lead Nigeria to the promised land, likening his administration to a Pharaoh-like regime that had worsened economic conditions for ordinary Nigerians, Daily Post Nigeria reported.
Political tensions extended further as Peoples Redemption Party National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed warned Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress that the North would resist what he described as a vote-buying plot ahead of the 2027 general elections. Baba-Ahmed issued the warning during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today programme, Daily Post Nigeria reported. Separately, a convoy carrying Bauchi State House of Assembly Speaker Abubakar Suleiman was involved in a road accident while returning from a campaign flag-off in Burra, Ningi Local Government Area, though no lives were lost, according to Daily Post Nigeria. In Rivers State, government officials from the Ministries of Energy and Natural Resources, and Environment visited the Aleto community in Eleme Local Government Area to assess damage from a recent gas pipeline explosion that left residents with injuries and property losses.
On a more positive note, Nigeria's Flamingos defeated Puerto Rico 2-0 in their second group game at the 2026 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Precious Oscar scoring for the Nigerian side, Daily Post Nigeria reported. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also mourned the deaths of Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti and former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, describing them as titans whose passing represented a significant loss for Nigeria, according to a statement issued by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi.
