Rwanda: Kagame Says Formula One Deal Fits Broader Development Ambitions
KIGALI, Oct. 14 (EME) – Rwandan President Paul Kagame has described a newly announced 10-year Formula One partnership as consistent with the country’s larger economic and continental ambitions, according to coverage shared by The New Times Rwanda (@NewTimesRwanda).
Under the agreement, a purpose-built circuit near Bugesera, roughly 40 km south of Kigali and adjacent to a new international airport, is expected to host an African Grand Prix in the early 2030s – the first Formula One race on the continent since 1993. Kagame has said the project aims to attract investment, create private-sector opportunities and involve other African countries. Formula One and FIA officials have emphasised the need for local skills development and lasting economic benefits.
The announcement has drawn both supportive commentary and scepticism regarding costs relative to national income levels on social platforms.
