Nigeria Roundup: Security Concerns, Child Abuse Arrest, and Fuel Protests Dominate Latest Developments
ABUJA – Nigeria's security landscape remained under strain this week as a series of incidents – ranging from the killing of a senior security officer in Plateau State to miners' deaths in NSCDC custody in Niger State – highlighted persistent challenges facing the country, even as law enforcement agencies recorded arrests in Lagos and Abuja, according to reports by Daily Post Nigeria on Sept. 23–24, 2026.
Security Incidents Take Center Stage
In one of the most alarming developments, an officer of the Plateau State security outfit Operation Rainbow publicly vowed to personally avenge the killing of the outfit's deputy commander, CSP David Babale, according to Daily Post Nigeria. Babale was killed in an ambush Tuesday by gunmen suspected to be Fulani terrorists while the team was traveling to Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. The officer's public statement raised concerns about vigilante reprisals in a region already grappling with recurring violence.
Separately, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, now the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, disclosed details he said he received from a survivor among miners who died in the custody of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State, Daily Post Nigeria reported Wednesday. Atiku, speaking through his spokesperson Phrank Shaibu, said the account raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The NSCDC has not been without controversy this week – the same agency's FCT Command arrested three suspects, including a truck driver, over the alleged vandalism of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) pipelines in Dafa village, Kwali Area Council of Abuja, according to FCT Commandant Dr. Olusola Odumosu.
Child Abuse Arrest in Lagos, Violence Warning in Taraba
Lagos State Police arrested a man captured in a widely circulated social media video beating a toddler with what appeared to be a charger cable, reportedly because the child was unable to read, Daily Post Nigeria reported Sept. 23. The footage drew widespread public condemnation before authorities moved in to detain the suspect.
Meanwhile, in Taraba State, Commissioner of Police Edwin Ogbegbagha visited communities in Sardauna Local Government Area affected by recent violence and urged residents to provide credible information to help identify those sponsoring attacks in the area, according to Daily Post Nigeria. Ogbegbagha made the appeal during an on-the-spot assessment of affected communities, calling for greater civilian cooperation with security agencies.
Fuel Costs Squeeze Transport Operators
On the economic front, commercial minibus operators in Osogbo, Osun State – locally known as "Korope" drivers – staged a peaceful protest Wednesday at Ayetoro, demanding urgent government intervention over rising petrol prices, Daily Post Nigeria reported. The operators specifically called for the establishment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refueling stations in the state, arguing that the absence of such infrastructure was compounding financial pressure on their businesses.
NPFL: Barau FC Rise, Enyimba Struggle
In sports, Barau FC climbed to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) standings following a 2-0 victory over Abia Warriors, with goals from Joseph Atule and Ibrahim Ayoola, Daily Post Nigeria reported. In contrast, Enyimba Football Club of Aba suffered a 2-3 home defeat to Sporting Lagos, leaving the club at the bottom of the league table and disappointing home fans, according to the same outlet.
The week's developments underscore the breadth of challenges confronting Nigeria – from security threats and alleged abuses of state power to economic pressures and child welfare concerns – as authorities across multiple states work to respond to an increasingly complex national environment.
