Sports World Rocked by Injuries and Upsets as NBA Season Opens
Oct 22 – A wave of significant injuries and surprising results dominated the sports world this week, with major setbacks for Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and England's rugby league side compounding a humiliating Champions League defeat for Manchester United, while the NBA season got underway with a notable result in Philadelphia.
Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will undergo surgery after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during PSG's 4-2 Champions League victory over Barcelona on Tuesday, according to BBC Sport and The Guardian. The Georgian winger twisted the knee just before the hour mark and was helped off the pitch unable to bear weight on his right leg. The Guardian reported that Kvaratskhelia reacted to the diagnosis by asking "why me?", with the injury described as the most serious of three sustained by PSG players, as Ousmane Dembele and Marquinhos were also ruled out for several weeks.
Arsenal also face an injury crisis after manager Mikel Arteta said the quadriceps injury sustained by Bukayo Saka in the club's Champions League draw with Bayern Munich "does not look good at all," according to BBC Sport. The setback adds to mounting concerns at the north London club. Meanwhile, England rugby league head coach Stuart Barrow described the withdrawal of forward Jasmin Strange from the World Cup squad as a "devastating blow," with Strange ruled out due to a knee injury, BBC Sport reported. In rugby union, England made significant selection changes following their first defeat in four years, with star full-back Ellie Kildunne dropped to the bench, according to BBC Sport.
Manchester United's troubled season deepened on Wednesday when they suffered what The Guardian described as their worst defeat in continental football since 1994, losing heavily to Como in a Champions League fixture played by Lake Como. BBC Sport reported that Nico Paz starred for the hosts as Como, playing just their third ever Champions League match under manager Cesc Fabregas, inflicted a damaging result that piled further pressure on United manager Michael Carrick. The Guardian noted that the defeat raised serious questions about Carrick's job security.
On a more positive note, LeBron James made his debut for the Philadelphia 76ers on the opening night of the NBA season, scoring 14 points as the 76ers defeated reigning champions the New York Knicks, BBC Sport reported. In golf, former Open Championship winner Louis Oosthuizen became the latest high-profile player to depart LIV Golf, according to BBC Sport. In an administrative development for rugby, World Rugby appointed former tennis professional and United States Tennis Association executive Megan Rose as managing director of the 2031 men's Rugby World Cup, which will be held in the United States for the first time. The Guardian quoted Rose as calling the appointment "an extraordinary honour."
