Plateau State Sees Continued Security Operations as Resource Control and Political Realignment Shape Outlook

By Tessy Chollom · October 13, 2026

JOS, Oct. 13 (EME) – Security forces in Plateau State have continued operations against armed groups amid violence linked to control of mineral resources, farmland and supply routes, while the state government has pursued political realignment with the ruling party at the federal level.

Troops under Operation Enduring Peace have reported rescues of kidnapped victims in Wase Local Government Area and the recovery of weapons. Local reporting, including detailed accounts from conflict journalist Masara Kim (@masskeemz), has documented attacks in areas south of Jos, including the killing of a police officer and injuries to a DSS operative in incidents around Bokkos and Mangu in mid-October. Governor Caleb Mutfwang has noted that dozens of communities have been affected or abandoned. Analyses have increasingly pointed to competition over artisanal mining sites and farmlands, alongside longstanding farmer-herder tensions.

Separately, Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Jos as Mutfwang formally aligned with the All Progressives Congress, describing the move as part of broader national political realignment ahead of 2027. Federal and state officials have emphasised deployments, intelligence gathering and infrastructure projects, including road works, as part of efforts to stabilise the area. Posts on X from @masskeemz and other local observers have provided near-real-time accounts of specific incidents, underscoring the gap between official statements and on-the-ground conditions in a region that often receives limited national attention.
